Vinyl Sunday – Music of the 60’s – November 15th
Sarah just gave me two crates of music. I am so excited to play these records at 60’s night. Doors, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Rolling Stones. You name it. This music reminds me of my first CD I ever purchased. I sent away for it. Freedom Rock. Turn it Up! Head down to Cantine Winepub in Aptos and enjoy the music.
Vinyl Sunday – Music of the 80’s – September 20th
I was in Junior High from 1984 to 1986. There was so much music coming out at that time. The rise of Hip Hop (parachute pants and break dancing) as well as new wave filled the airways. I went to my first KMEL Summer Jam, where I saw all the artists on one stage that I sang a long to in the shower. On September 20th, I will be hand selecting and spinning everything from Run DMC and Al B Sure to Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. Should be a total flashback.
Vinyl Sunday – Grateful Dead August 16th
My first experience at a Dead Show was in high school. It was New Years Eve at the Oakland Coliseum. I never made it inside, because my miracle never came, but I knew this was a community I would get to know and like. I saw a Dead cover band in college, and that is when I started to experience the “Love”. Everyone was so friendly (and high as kites) and let the music move them every which way.
The first time I experienced a show was in Las Vegas. It was such a scene, and the free spirits were in full force. The music reminds me of a happy time, and some great fun. I have had so much fun hunting for all the great records they put out. Of living the nostalgia. I can’t wait to fill the room with “Estimated Prophet” or “Cumberland Blues”.
Vinyl Sunday – Blues and Jazz – July 19th
This is one of my favorite nights. John Lee Hooker with Canned Heat, Robert Johnson, Koko Taylor belt the Blues, while Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and Charlie Parker swoon me with mind blowing jazz.
Vinyl Sunday – BYOV (Bring Your Own Vinyl) June 28th, 2015
A couple Vinyl Sundays ago, a patron at Cantine Winepub came up to me while I was spinning vinyl Reggae and said, “I have a box of vinyl records at my house that I need to get rid of. Do you want them? ” Long story short, he brought me his unwanted stack and turns out there were some GEMS! Elton John (which he had a story about meeting him in San Diego), Dusty Springfield, show tunes, country, opera etc. When the night was dying down, I started to go through the stack and what fun we had listing to the random collection. We decided to have a night where folks could bring down their favorites from their stack and I would play them. I know how much joy I get going through the records, taking them out of the sleeves, checking out the liner notes, and listening to the needle click on to the first track. I can’t wait to hear what people bring, I know I will pick some of my favorites to share!
Vinyl Sunday – British Invasion April 12, 2015
All the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones and the Who you could ask for, in one Sunday afternoon in Aptos, CA. Cantine Winepub is a great place to listen to music. Relaxed atmosphere, great food and a view off the deck. Firing up my huge collection of Beatles records and taking myself back to the days where my dad would blast “Can’t Buy me Love” for parties in the backyard.
Vinyl Sunday – Honky Tonk – March 1st, 2015
Now this is a Vinyl Sunday not to be missed. I am gonna spin the old school country that inspired myself and so many others to write songs. All I needed to do was dig around in an old stack my father in law gave me. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Kitty Wells, Dolly Parton, and so many more. No better way to spend a Sunday afternoon/evening. Hope you can make it.
Vinyl Sunday – 80’s New Wave – January 25th, 2015
What do you call all that music you sang along to and recorded on to tape when there were countdown’s every weekend on Live 105? Your Erasure, Blondie, The Cars, Duran Duran, Culture Club 45’s were abundant and played often. It wasn’t rock, or pop, or punk.
I was a “Waver” for a short stint in the 7th and 8th grade. My good friend up the street introduced me to Depeche Mode, New Order and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. I am bringing it all back January 25th at Cantine Winepub in Aptos, which is shaping up to the go to monthly event. Hope you all can make it.
Vinyl Sunday – Reggae December 21, 2014
Well, it was a hit. Many people showed up to hear Motown at the premiere Vinyl Sunday event. So we are doing it again, this time with reggae. The owner of Cantine says he has over 140 reggae records for me to choose from. Plus I have my own batch of great reggae records from Nichole (Jason’s old collection). I have many reggae memories, that I hope to portray with this night. I do have fond memories of Bob Marley in high school, at fun parties with people who only liked Bob because it meant there was weed around. But college was when I really got into it. I went to Mexico with some friends where there was a huge festival happening. We partied back stage with Pato Banton and Eek -a-Mouse. They were kind, and took care of us. I am excited to explore this genre, plus the food is off the hook at this place, and the atmosphere friendly and relaxing. There will be a Cider Maker pouring tastes and everyone will have a good time.
